“Neelalohita” is a name for Lord Shiva. “Neel” means blue and refers to Shiva’s throat that turned blue when he drank the “halahal” (poison) that came out from the churning of the ocean. “Lohita” means red and refers to Shiva’s forehead which is seen red as his third eye glows with “Kaalagni” (destructive fire). Devi Parvati sits in Shiva’s throat blocking the poison.
This is a “Kalamkari” style depiction of Shiva dancing in Chidambaram and Nandi playing the mridang beside him.
